Viruses are extremely simple. They are primarily just a protein shell encasing some genetic material: either DNA or RNA. That genetic material is composed of molecules.
The United Kingdom fell into lockdown on November 5th, 2020. They were attempting to contain an increase in Covid-19 instances. And, based on the chart of examples, it appeared to work. Despite the same lockdown efforts, illnesses in Kent, a county outside of London, were still rising.
Despite the overall decline in instances, the country relaxed restrictions in early December. Then something strange happened, mutating to the more dangerous version of itself and affecting more people.

It had spread to most of southeast England by the time scientists gave it a name. It has widespread in most parts of Europe.
