Black Lives Matter is a term and, more importantly, a hashtag used to draw attention to the racism, injustice, and inequality that black people face.
Its popularity developed in the United States following high-profile police killings, but it was also used in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Supporters point to the reality that in the United States, black people are far more likely to be killed by police. They claim that they face a variety of other types of discrimination in the United States and many other countries. They want action taken to rectify mistreatment and oppression that dates back to slavery but still exists today.

Demonstrations in the United Kingdom brought attention to the country’s colonial heritage, and statues of those associated with the slave trade were desecrated.
